Ethics Review Committee (ERC) of Faculty of Science, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka
INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANTS
The ERC will grant ethical clearance for biology-related research projects involving Biology related subjects (animals, microbiology, plants and human etc.). Ethical clearance is not granted for clinical research, i.e., research studies performed on patients.
- The applicant can be an investigator or student with the consent of the supervisor in the research for which ethical clearance is sought.
- If the applicant is from another institute, the ethical clearance letter from his/her institute should be attached along with the application
- The ERC will meet every two months (starting from February) a year on the 1st Monday and the applications that reach the secretary on or before 15 days of this deadline will be considered at the meeting.
- Only duly completed application forms will be reviewed. If not, the ERC may request further information which may delay the date of the decision.
- The grant will be valid only for the stipulated dates indicated in the letter of approval.
- The decision will be conveyed to the applicant as soon as possible.
- The decision of the ERC will be final. However, an applicant may send their appeals or complaints to the Chairman/chairperson of ERC.

Both soft copies and hard copies of the application need to be submitted. However, due to the prevailing situation, submission of a softcopy alone is acceptable.

Checklist for applicants
- Covering letter signed by the applicant
• Completed Application Form
• Where applicable, the information sheets for research participants
• Where applicable, the consent forms, data collection/questionnaire forms
• Any other relevant documents (Specify)
Failure to comply with these instructions would result in the application being returned, and/or delay in obtaining ethical clearance.
