RISTCON 2021 is is organized by the Faculty of Science, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. This conference aims to provide the premier multidisciplinary forum for leading academics, researchers and research students to present and discuss their innovations, concerns, practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted in the fields of Science & Technology.

Title: The rise of blue carbon science in Sri Lanka: conservation, restoration and resilience

Blue carbon ecosystems such as mangrove forests, seagrass meadows and tidal marshes are vitally important components of Sri Lanka’s coastal environments. They support countless species, provide vital ecosystem services, protect coastlines and trap atmospheric CO2. This keynote address will provide a brief introduction to the evolving science focused on these valuable habitats in Sri Lanka, discuss the drivers of their historical loss, and finish with some of the optimistic activities being promoted during the UNs 2021-2030 “Decade of ecological restoration”.
