  • We use computational methods to study the structural, linear optical and nonlinear optical properties of chemical systems. Interest in highly efficient nonlinear optical (NLO) materials has grown enormously over the past three decades. This is mainly due to their potential in many applications such as optical computing, optical communications, optical switches, and optical storage. Various systems have been investigated in recent years for their NLO activity. In particular, coordination and organometallic systems have attracted significant attention because they expand the possibilities for tuning NLO properties by varying the metal center when compared to organic chromophores. Alongside the experimental techniques employed for the characterization of novel NLO materials, computational methods have become an increasingly powerful and versatile tool. In particular, Density Functional Theory, DFT, appears very well suited to the modelling and exploration of large TM-containing complexes. We are using computational methods, primarily DFT, to explore the structural, linear optical and nonlinear optical properties of chemical systems, particularly transition-metal (TM) organometallic systems. These studies will assist the experimentalists in designing novel chromophores with optimal nonlinear activity.
