Faculty of Science is one of the pioneering faculties at the University of Ruhuna, which was founded in 1978 and has made an immense contribution for the country’s tertiary education throughout the last 44 years. The Faculty of Science offers learning and research opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of Biological Science, Physical Science and Computer Science.

At present, the faculty comprises of six departments namely, Department of Botany, Department of Chemistry, Department of Computer Science, Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics and Department of Zoology. Each Department of the Faculty contributes to strengthen the graduate programs lasting three to four years, by active classroom teaching, student-centered learning activities, practicals, field visits, and industrial training. Students who graduate from the Faculty of Science are provided with the essential skills of communication in English, basic computer literacy, and statistics & numeracy throughout their studentship at the faculty, while having sound knowledge in subject matter required for lifelong learning. The faculty produces postgraduate students in various disciplines with the support of national and international grants and supervised by highly qualified nationally and internationally recognized scientists.

The Faculty offers many opportunities for students to become adaptable, flexible, responsible and pleasing citizens of the country with a good vision for life through taught courses and research forums as well as extra-curricular activities associated with the physical education unit, career guidance unit and academic societies. The activities launched through different events helps to enhance students’ practical knowledge in problem analysis, teamwork and leadership skills, the ability to be potential inventors or innovators, as well as entrepreneurs and good managers with good ethics and professionalism.

Our students are nourished by friendly and highly skilled academic staff who possess experience in various disciplines of science and had obtained their postgraduate qualifications from high ranking universities and institutions around the world. The success of our students’ careers is backed by the academic staff of the Faculty of Science with the support of Academic Support Staff, temporary academic staff and non-academic staff members who ensure to undertake teaching and research activities with the best possible facilities for the students to become the highly recognized scientists required for the country as well as the world.
